Pilot Vehicle Requirements in Queensland: When You Need an Escort

5 August 2026Brisbane Heavy Transport

Why pilot vehicles matter

A pilot vehicle (sometimes called an escort vehicle) travels ahead of or behind an oversize load to warn other road users, protect the load and the public, and help the heavy vehicle driver navigate safely. Pilot vehicles are a legal requirement for many oversize and overmass moves in Queensland — not an optional extra.

The pilot driver acts as a second set of eyes, identifying hazards ahead, managing traffic at intersections, and communicating with the heavy vehicle driver by two-way radio. On the widest and heaviest moves, a police escort is required in addition to pilots.

When is a pilot vehicle required in Queensland?

Escort requirements are triggered by the dimensions and mass of the load. While exact requirements vary by road class and location, the general thresholds in Queensland are:

  • Over 4.5 metres wide — one pilot vehicle required
  • Over 5.5 metres wide — two pilot vehicles required
  • Over 8.5 metres wide — police escort required (in addition to pilots)
  • Excessive length — pilot vehicles may be required for long loads on certain roads
  • Excessive height or overhang — pilots may be required depending on the route

These thresholds are a guide only. The actual escort level for your move is specified in the conditions of your NHVR permit, which is based on the route, the road class, and the specific dimensions of your load. We confirm the exact requirement for every move we undertake.

Single pilot vs dual pilot

A single pilot typically travels ahead of the load to warn oncoming traffic and help the driver negotiate intersections and tight sections. A dual pilot configuration places one vehicle ahead and one behind, providing full coverage of the load and surrounding traffic. Dual pilots are required for wider loads where the risk to other road users is greater.

The pilot ahead checks for overhead obstructions, oncoming traffic, and route hazards, while the rear pilot protects the load from following traffic and helps with lane changes and turns. Both pilots maintain two-way communication with the heavy vehicle driver throughout the move.

When is a police escort required?

A police escort is required for the largest and most complex oversize moves. In Queensland, loads over 8.5 metres wide generally require a police escort, as do certain high-risk loads on busy or constrained routes. Police escorts may also be required for:

  • Extremely long loads
  • Loads travelling through major urban areas during restricted windows
  • Moves requiring road closures or traffic control on major arterials
  • Loads with exceptional mass on critical structures

Police escorts are coordinated through Queensland Police, and the notification and scheduling are managed as part of the permit process. We handle this coordination on your behalf.

Pilot vehicle accreditation

Pilot vehicle operators must hold the appropriate accreditation. In Queensland, pilots must operate a vehicle fitted with the required warning lights, signs, and communication equipment, and the driver must be competent in escorting oversize loads. Our pilot operators are fully accredited and experienced across all Queensland road classes.

Pilot vehicles as part of a full service

For most of our clients, pilot vehicles are supplied as part of a complete transport package — we move the load and provide the escorts in one coordinated operation. This is the simplest approach, because the pilots and the heavy vehicle driver work together regularly and communicate seamlessly.

We also offer standalone pilot vehicle services for operators who are moving their own oversize loads and need accredited escorts. Our pilots coordinate directly with your driver and manage the escort requirements for your move.

Factors that change escort requirements

Escort requirements aren't fixed — they can change based on:

  • The route — different road classes have different thresholds
  • The time of travel — night moves may have different requirements
  • Urban vs rural — moves through built-up areas often need more escorts
  • Seasonal and event factors — public holidays and major events can restrict travel

This is why a route survey is essential. We assess the full route, not just the load, to determine the correct escort configuration for every kilometre of the journey.

Planning your escort requirements

If you're planning an oversize move, the escort requirement is one of the first things we determine. We assess your load's dimensions, plan the route, and confirm the pilot and police escort levels required. We then arrange the pilots, coordinate any police escort, and ensure every escort is in place and briefed before the move begins.

Getting escort requirements wrong is one of the most common compliance failures in heavy haulage — and one of the easiest to avoid with proper planning. If you have an oversize move coming up, talk to us early. Call 0407 977 529 and we'll walk you through the escort requirements for your specific load and route.
